Mary Helen Anderson Wiki: Salary, Married, Wedding, Spouse, Family
Merry Anders (born Mary Helen Anderson; May 22, 1932 – October 28, 2012) was an American actress who appeared in a number of television programs and films from the 1950s until her retirement from the screen in 1972. In 1954, she succeeded Ann Todd as Stuart Erwin's daughter in the final season of his television series, The Stu Erwin Show.In the 1955-1956 season, she joined Janis Paige in the 26-week CBS sitcom It's Always Jan. From 1957-1959, Anders co-starred with Barbara Eden and Lori Nelson in How to Marry a Millionaire, a syndicated 20th Century Fox television series based on the 1953 film How to Marry a Millionaire. The three played young women living in New York City and trying to land wealthy husbands. In the latter 1950s and 1960s, Anders made numerous television appearances, including the premiere episode "Brannigan's Boots" of the ABC/Warner Brothers western series Sugarfoot, with Will Hutchins in the title role. She is cast as the character Katie Brannigan, who inadvertently coins the character's name, "Sugarfoot", and it was not meant as a compliment. She appeared on the Sugarfoot rotation series Cheyenne with Clint Walker in the episode "The Longest Rope", guest-starring with Peter Whitney and Donald May.Other Anders appearances included the Walter Brennan ABC sitcom, The Real McCoys. She made four guest appearances in Lassie, four on 77 Sunset Strip, and three times on Perry Mason, including the role of Sadie Hepner in the 1962 episode, "The Case of the Glamorous Ghost." Anders also appeared in seven episodes of the 1967 version of Jack Webb's Dragnet series on NBC, in which she played policewoman Dorothy Miller.Anders left show business in 1972 to work for a division of Litton Industries, where she remained until her retirement in 1994. Her last screen role was as Shirley in the two-part episode "Waste" of CBS's Gunsmoke.

1 | [on working with Ted de Corsia in The Quick Gun (1964)] He was just great, though. Just perfect as his character. It helped me in a way because I was supposedly so terrified of him I was speechless. |
2 | [on quitting her acting career] I had a couple of years where I only grossed about three thousand dollars and I couldn't make a living. Dad wrote me a letter and said, "Get out of that movie business, get yourself a decent job, girl!" I was divorced and it's hard to raise a child, have a nice home, put up the appearance of success, drive a car in perfect running shape and everything when you're on unemployment. |
3 | I come on the set with my lines learned and then I read them like Merry Anders. Usually that's enough, but if the director wants something more, then we go to work. After that the lines come out like Merry Anders working. |

1 | Retired after 25 years at Litton Data Systems as a Customer Relations coordinator [1994] |
2 | Interviewed in Tom Weaver's books "Attack of the Monster Movie Makers" (McFarland & Co., 1994) and "A Sci-Fi Swarm and Horror Horde" (McFarland & Co., 2010). |
3 | In 2005, resided in Encino, California, with her husband. |
4 | She had a daughter who attended Los Angeles Valley College in the 1970s. Apparently trying to follow in her mother's footsteps, the daughter appeared in college plays, for example, "A Midsummer's Night Dream," but without much acclaim or, as far as is known, without any professional appearances later. |
5 | She continued acting in the 1970s by registering for at least one class at Los Angeles Valley College each year in order to appear in a college play. Among her credits was "The Glass Menagerie", and playing her daughter was the soon-to-be-famous TV actress Christopher Norris. |
6 | Although she was actually a blonde, Jack Webb insisted that she wear a brunette wig during her appearances on the second Dragnet 1967 (1967) series (1967-1970) on the grounds that it made her look more serious. |
